Managing Your Weight Loss Treatment

This article covers common questions about managing your GLP-1 weight loss treatment with ZipHealth. It explains when to start your medication, how to take it correctly, how to store oral weight loss tablets, what to do if you are unsure your medication is working, how to switch between weight loss medications, how to manage your treatment during illness, and what steps to take if you are scheduled for surgery or a procedure requiring general anesthesia.

When should I start my weight loss treatment?

Choose a day that fits your regular routine. You will usually take your GLP-1 weight loss medication — Zepbound® (tirzepatide), Wegovy® Injectable (semaglutide injection), Wegovy® Pill (oral semaglutide), or Foundayo™ (orforglipron) — on the same day each week.

Before starting your weight loss treatment:

  1. Read the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) included with your medication.

  2. Check your medication to make sure it looks as expected.

  3. Make sure you understand how to take your first dose correctly.

If anything about your medication looks unusual, or you are unsure how to take your first dose, contact the ZipHealth Clinical team before starting.

What should I do if I am unsure how to take my weight loss treatment?

  1. Check the instructions included with your medication.

  2. If you are still unsure after checking both resources, contact ZipHealth before taking your dose.

The ZipHealth support team can direct you to the correct guidance. The ZipHealth Clinical team can answer treatment-specific questions.

Where should I store oral weight loss tablets?

Oral weight loss tablets — including Wegovy® Pill (oral semaglutide) and Foundayo™ (orforglipron) — should be stored as follows:

  • Store at room temperature

  • Keep oral tablets in their original packaging

  • Keep oral tablets away from moisture

  • Do not transfer oral weight loss tablets into another container

  • Keep oral weight loss tablets out of reach of children and pets

Can I switch from one weight loss medication to another?

Yes. Switching weight loss medications is a normal and common occurrence. Medical professionals regularly switch patients between medications — whether to reduce side effects, improve results, or lower costs.

ZipHealth will work with you to find the weight loss treatment that is right for your needs, budget, and goals.

What should I do if I am not sure my weight loss medication is working?

Weight loss with GLP-1 medications is a gradual process. These medications begin working soon after your first dose by reducing appetite and helping you feel fuller for longer. Zepbound® and Wegovy® remain active in the body for about a week, which is why they are taken once per week.

While some people may notice weight loss within the first few weeks, these medications are designed as long-term treatments rather than quick fixes. Weight loss is more likely to be steady over many months, and everyone's experience will differ.

To support your weight loss medication:

  • Make sure you are in a calorie deficit — this means burning more calories than you consume.

  • Maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise alongside your GLP-1 medication.

There is no single correct dose for everyone. The ZipHealth Clinical team will work with you to find what feels best, balancing comfort, side effects, and results.

If you have been taking your weight loss medication for several weeks and have not noticed any changes in appetite or weight, contact ZipHealth to discuss your treatment further.

Should I stay on my current dose if my weight loss medication is working?

Yes. If your current dose is working well and you are satisfied with your progress, you can remain on that dose for as long as it suits you.

You also have the option to increase your dose if you feel ready and your physician agrees.

What should I do if I get a cold or the flu while taking weight loss medication?

If you become unwell with a cold or the flu while taking a GLP-1 weight loss medication, treat your illness as you normally would:

  • Stay hydrated

  • Rest

  • Take over-the-counter cold and flu medications if needed

Important — hydration: GLP-1 weight loss medications can increase the risk of dehydration. If you have a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea while taking these, drink extra fluids beyond what you would normally consume.

If you experience severe diarrhea lasting longer than a few days, or vomiting that prevents you from keeping down food or fluids:

  1. Stop taking your weight loss medication.

  2. Seek in-person medical care.

  3. Tell the healthcare provider the specific name of your weight loss medication.

What should I do if I am scheduled for surgery or a procedure requiring general anesthesia?

If you are scheduled for surgery or a procedure requiring general anesthesia while taking a GLP-1 weight loss medication:

  1. During your pre-operative assessment, inform your surgical team that you are taking a GLP-1 weight loss medication. Tell them the specific medication name — Zepbound® (tirzepatide), Wegovy® (semaglutide), Foundayo™ (orforglipron), or compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide.

  2. Contact ZipHealth so the ZipHealth Clinical team can update your medical records before your procedure.
